The Ministry of Church Ushering is a sacred and powerful responsibility. A Church Usher helps the Pastor by making sure all members and guest are greeted warmly and by doing what is necessary to put guests in the right fame of mind for worship. Church Ushers must possess a spirit of meekness and humility and must be well-trained in all aspects of the techniques of Church Ushering in order to master the situations that may arise during a church service.
"For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness."
Psalms 84:10 (KJV)
The National United Church Ushers Association of America, Incorporated, an interdenominational organization of Church Ushers, was organized to break down the barrier of discrimination and prejudice which has seriously hampered the Church in its efforts to perform its mission in the world. Additional purposes include: to create a better service and broaden the field in Christian, social, and moral activities as Ushers; to foster more intimate and cordial relations among state unions; to unify an ushering system; to enlighten Ushers in Christian work and practice the Golden Rule - “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you;” and to become a source of inspiration for doing greater things in Christianity.
We believe that the mission of the Church is to lead all mankind to Christ, and that the Church Usher has a very definite part to play in the accomplishment of the Church’s mission as God’s representatives on earth. So much can be accomplished through organized efforts, and we cannot see any just reason why all Church ushers should not be joined together in one great organization working for the betterment of a common cause.
Often times, we do not know or forget from whence comes ushering - from God. God was the very first usher - as he ushered in day and light (Gen. 1:3-4). God ushered man into the Garden of Eden (Gen 2:15).
Ushers or forerunners are depicted throughout the Bible. Abraham ushered Faithfulness into the world (Gen. 22). Moses ushered the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt into the promised land. The Star of Bethlehem ushered the wise men of the East to the place where Christ was born, John the Baptist forerunner of Christ – prepared the way. He was the voice crying in the wilderness (John 1:6-13).
